Police warn of heating oil thefts

Police are asking members of rural communities to be vigilant following a series of heating oil fuel thefts.

Homes in the east of Lincolnshire have had their fuel tanks attacked and drained of their contents in recent weeks and now officers are prioritising their efforts to tackle this type of crime.

Police said that they have seen a historical trend of oil and diesel thefts whenever the price of the commodity rises.

The Oil Firing Technical Association (OFTEC) has also issued some advice to concerned homeowners.

According to the group, the fuel tanks should be locked either at the inspection cover or at the filler cap. Once it is secure, an intruder alarm system can be installed that lets people now if levels drop.

Jeremy Hawksley from OFTEC said: "Making a regular note of your oil levels and taking simple preventative measures will help to make sure that you are not the victim of oil theft."
