Police urge people to protect themselves against crime this Christmas

It is now December and many police forces across the country are urging people to take steps to avoid being a victim of crime over the Christmas period.

Northumbria Police have become the latest constabulary to launch a scheme that advises homeowners on what to do to make their property safe.

The Don't Let Thieves Steal Your Christmas campaign tells people to not leave any presents on view and reminds them to lock up all their windows and doors before they leave their house.

If people are off to a party, police urge them to close their curtains and set timers to ensure that lights come on while they are out.

Northumbria Police also advise people to consider fitting security systems such as burglar alarms to their property, as burglars look for houses that have no visible signs of protection.

Other advice includes refraining from hiding spare keys outside a home in places that a burglar may look.
