People in London have been warned they are most at risk of becoming the victim of a burglary, with more than half the UK's top 20 hotspots for this crime found in the capital.
New research by MoneySuperMarket has found the M21 postcode in Manchester is home to the highest number of burglary claims overall, but it is London that dominates the rest of the list.
In total, 12 of the top 20 areas for burglary claims are found in the city, with the popular north London area of Muswell Hill (N10) finishing third in the overall table, while East Finchley and Hampstead Garden Suburb came fifth.
South of the river the story is not much better, with Herne Hill and Tulse Hill (SE24) named as the second most likely place for burglary claims to be made, while Dagenham in east London (RM8) finished fourth.
While London took more than half the spots on the list, other cities around the UK are also experiencing high levels of theft. Birmingham and Liverpool both had two postcodes in the top 20.
Kevin Pratt, home insurance expert at MoneySuperMarket, said it is important to remember that just because somewhere is named on the burglary hotspot list, it does not necessarily follow that it is a bad place to live. In fact, thieves often target some of the most desirable and wealthiest areas.
Jim Maddan, chairman of the Neighbourhood and Home Watch Network for England and Wales, offered some practical advice by suggesting home security is an issue that should be on everyone's mind.
"It's always worth investing in security measures for your home - the majority of burglaries are opportunistic and criminals will often simply choose the easiest-looking target," he explained.
A home security alarm system from SECOM is the perfect way to protect a property against the threat of burglary, as it is linked to a 24-hour response centre that can act within minutes should thieves break in.
