Intruder alarms recommended to stable owners

People with stables or outbuildings are being urged to consider the use of an exterior intruder alarm as a way of protecting their property.

Avon and Somerset Police had been called out to a number of thefts at outhouses in the last month and now they have taken the step of issuing advice to people who may be worried that they will be targeted next by thieves.

Police constable Sam Iddon from Bridgwater Police Station explained that tack and other equestrian equipment is often very expensive and this means that it is attractive to opportunistic thieves.

"I encourage the public to employ some simple measures such as property marking their saddlery and tack and ensuring that outbuildings and tack rooms are locked wherever possible," he said.

Burglar alarms and security lighting could also help to reduce the chances of a theft, officers said.

PC Iddon added that although these measures are simple to implement, they are also very effective.
