BSIA: Security technology can cut oil theft numbers

The British Security Industry Association (BSIA) has said that the latest security systems technology is helping to combat the spate of oil thefts across the UK.

Prices of heating oil have rocketed in recent months with rising global commodity prices and as such, isolated rural properties have been targeted by thieves looking to steal the high-value goods.

"Isolated locations are particularly at risk, with commercial and domestic properties both affected. Security technology, however, can help combat this problem," said Adrian Mealing, chairman of the BSIA's security equipment manufacturers section.

A new device has been developed that can alert homeowners to rapid decreases in the amount of fuel in their tanks and a wireless signal can even be sent to a remote intruder alarm.

Around 1.3 million homes in the UK need the heating oil to get them through the winter and pay an average of £900 for 1,000 litres of fuel.
