Thieves target Scottish hospitals

Hospital bosses have been urged to improve their security systems after criminals in Scotland targeted clinical sites in a spate of thefts.

More than £1,500 worth of cast iron drain covers and a TV were taken from the Vale of Leven Hospital, while thieves have also targeted the Royal Alexandria Hospital with nearly £80,000 worth of IT equipment being stolen in the past four years.

Jackie Baillie MSP told the Lennox Herald she was "shocked" by the figures, adding that with less nurses in the hospital these days, it is up to managers to stop this from happening.

A spokeswoman for NHSGCC said: "The majority of wards in our hospitals have some form of security measures including intercom and bell ringing, but unfortunately items of equipment are still a target for thieves."

She added that the health authority asks staff and patients to be responsible and vigilant at all times and said that security staff will work with police to address the issue.
