Sheffield taxis to have CCTV installed

CCTV will be installed in taxis in Sheffield to help both drivers and their passengers feel safer.

All of the 2,224 licensed cabs in the city will have the cameras fitted following yesterday's (February 5th) review, reports the Postcode Gazette.

Councillor John Robson, chairman of the council's licensing committee, said: “Certainly if the public travelling in taxis could be advised that CCTV recording is taking place, it might give them some reassurance. Additionally, it might give the taxi drivers a feeling of security.”

Passengers will be made aware that they are being recorded and only authorised council and police officers will be able to view the images.

A number of the details surrounding the scheme are still to be discussed, including whether or not to include optional audio recording facilities, how they will be encrypted and the potential start date.

Once these issues have been discussed, the licensing committee will convene a special meeting in early May.
