Irish shoplifters to take €155k an hour

A new report from Ireland has found that shoplifters will take more than €155,000 (£126,226) worth of goods every hour in the build-up to Christmas.

The Irish Small and Medium Enterprises Association said that the crime will cost €220 million this year, with €44 million of goods being taken in the festive period alone.

"This cost does not take into account the amount spent on security, which adds hundreds of millions on to the cost for retail businesses," said the group's chief executive Mark Fielding.

It is estimated that over half of retailers in Ireland will be targeted in December.

This follows a similar report from the Centre for Retail Research, which found that £522 million will be lost through shoplifting in the UK this Christmas.

Now is the ideal time to invest in security systems, as the study found that the festive period also sees a rise in the number of organised thefts, which result in high-value goods being taken.
