CCTV to be used to protect children's playground

A children's play area that has been hit by a high number of thefts in recent times is to be protected by CCTV systems, the local council has said.

The BBC reports that equipment parts and decking were stolen from Whyteleafe ground in Hillbury Road last month - a year after it was rebuilt at a cost of £100,000.

Spokesman for Tandridge District Council (TDC) Steve Hyde said: "It really begs belief why somebody would want to do something to a children's play area like this.

"The particular items that were stolen are from the toddler area, which makes it even more disappointing."

He added that the total cost of the thefts that occurred between December 17th and 29th has not been finalised as yet, but it was going to be thousands of pounds.

TDC has already used cameras at another children's play area in its jurisdiction and since then, there has been a notable reduction in the amount of criminal activity that is recorded at the site.
