CCTV systems installed to help deter criminals and build community spirit

A new video surveillance scheme has been set up to help protect the rural residents of Banbridge.

Banbridge Neighbourhood Policing Team, NFU Mutual and Banbridge Policing and Community Safety Partnership have decided to pool their resources and work together to install the CCTV systems in farms and other properties across the village, the Dormore Leader reports.

It is hoped that not only will the number of convictions rise, but the cameras will act as a deterrent and lower the amount of crimes being committed.

Constable Jill McCormick said: "The rural community can often feel isolated and vulnerable in relation to crime and this scheme is about offering some extra protection."

She explained that crime in the countryside can have a devastating impact as machinery and livestock is often expensive and one incident can leave a farm struggling in a tough economic environment.

Constable McCormick added that the CCTV scheme could also help to bring about an improved community spirit via increased cooperation and communication.
