Border forces seize millions of pounds of fake goods

Border Force officers have stopped millions of pounds worth of fake goods from being shipped into the UK in the run-up to Christmas.

Home Office minister Mark Harper said: "Cheap counterfeits undercut honest traders leaving shoppers with goods that are at best inferior and, at worst, harmful or unsafe."

He added that the public can help to stifle the demand for these goods and ensure trade and business security by only buying "from genuine retailers".

The port in Felixstowe handles around 40 per cent of the UK's container trade throughout the year and officers there have seized more than £5 million worth of goods in recent weeks alone.

Kevin Sayer, one of the officers who works at the site, said it is easy to be tricked into a bargain, but over the festive period the message to shoppers should be that if something appears too good to be true it probably is.
