Secom’s commitment to developing top-class security industry skills has been rewarded with news that the company is one of four finalists in the Apprenticeships4England Awards.
Final positions will be announced at a gala dinner in London on 7 March, when Secom will be named as winner of a gold, silver, bronze or highly commended award in the large employer category.
The awards event coincides with the Celebration of Apprenticeships Conference – part of National Apprenticeship Week. The week aims to reinforce the message that apprenticeships can deliver for all employers, irrespective of size.
Welcoming the news, Commercial Director Alan Blake said: “This a significant step towards realising our intention to become an accredited training provider.
“We have already appointed a Training & Development Manager, to guide us through the process of obtaining accreditation. In addition, we are investing £50,000 in the new training centre in Birmingham, which will be the largest of our six training facilities, enabling us to increase Midlands apprenticeships to more than 35 at a time.
“Importantly, we have attended apprenticeship events at schools and colleges to raise awareness of our industry and the opportunities it can offer young engineers. It is essential that we engage with training providers and schools to promote our industry and show that Secom is at the forefront.
“One of the key reasons we are investing in apprenticeships is the ability to future proof our workforce, ensuring we have the knowledge and expertise to handle new systems and technologies. Historically, our industry has not provided enough programmes or support for young apprentices. But young people want to make a career in fire and security – and we need them.”
Alan Blake said: “Reaching the finals of the Apprenticeships4England Awards shows that Secom is on the right track.”
