Fire stopping is the sealing of openings or holes to prevent fire passing swiftly through a building. Secom recognises the importance of having a good fire protection strategy for your business, so we offer a range of products and services to ensure that you are best protected in the event of fire and smoke outbreak.

What is fire stopping?

Fire stopping is simply the sealing of any openings to prevent fire, smoke or heat from passing through multiple building compartments. By creating fire resistant compartments bot horizontally and vertically, the spread of fire can be contained. Buildings must ensure that any openings and gaps are fire stopped to restrict spread. Common areas that usually require sealing are joints or gaps between walls and floors, openings around pipes, cables and beams, drilled holes, or holes left by the removal of things.

When designing a fire protection strategy, the goal is to inhibit fire spreading and ensuring there is a safe exit. It gets right down to the detail and covers every single opening or join that may allow fire and smoke to pass through.

Design considerations for fire stopping

Every service passing through fire resistant building elements will react in a different way during a fire, so there is no single solution or product that will protect them all. The best way to ensure a wall or partition will provide the required fire performance is to consider the fire resistance period, the insulation requirement, the linear gaps in walls and floors, movement (were the wall to vibrate or expand from the heat) and the mechanical strength (how much load it can bear). It can be hard to understand which elements of fire protection you require, but the short answer is all of them. A functional fire system is created when everything is working together.

Our Accreditations

We are fully registered as a BAFE (British Approvals for Fire Equipment) Scheme SP203 company to design, install, commission, handover, maintain and verify fire detection and alarm systems in the UK. We are therefore assessed by independent inspectors on an annual basis. Our commitment to fire safety is demonstrated by ensuring that SECOM always maintain the highest level of third party accreditation available in the UK.

Managed & Monitored Fire Alarm Systems

SECOM have our own Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC). Our fire engineers can install products so our trained operators can monitor your system 24hrs a day; giving you peace of mind when away from your premises.
