Tighter Security Measures in the Recession

SECOM Roller Shutters  "Our Physical Security Division complements our electronic solutions by providing a wide range of fences, grilles, roller shutters, screens and doors – all designed to prevent unauthorised access to premises"  John White, Sales & Marketing Director, SECOM Plc
Security is a hot topic for private and public sector organisations especially in today's economic climate. John White, Sales and Marketing Director at SECOM Plc shares with us his views on what retailers, large and small, can do to better protect their premises, stock and staff:

You can't afford to cut back on security in a recession. If you are managing a business or running a home, you are probably looking for ways to save money as the recession lingers on. One area of expenditure you should not target is security – if you needed it in the good times, you'll probably need it even more when the going is tough.

The recession that followed the international banking crisis has forced many businesses, private individuals and public sector organisations to review their spending. While a cautious approach to costs is always sensible any attempt to save by cutting back on security is likely to be a false economy. In fact, recession should be a time for stepping up security. Unemployment can lead to desperation and there is perhaps a greater probability of criminal behaviour, both premeditated and opportunistic.

We would recommend that retailers, small and large, look to protect their premises by installing a combination of good physical security that can act as a barrier such as grilles fitted to shop fronts and in rear and side areas window bars. In areas where it is possible to ram raid then we would recommend fitting ram posts. The physical security should be backed up with an electronic intruder alarm installed by a reputable installer who is a member of NSI/ NACOSS – SECOM is a gold installer.

We would also recommend that the premises is covered by a CCTV system with recording facility. SECOM has a system called Vision Guard which transmits CCTV images back to our ARC where our operators can issue a voice challenge to the intruders/rioters or inform the police. Furthermore images can be stored off site at our ARC which could be used at a later date for evidential purposes.

Our Physical Security Division complements our electronic solutions by providing a wide range of fences, grilles, screens and doors – all designed to prevent unauthorised access to premises. Below is a brief overview on some of the Physical products we offer.

Commercial Galvanized Steel Roller Shutters

Our Galvanized Steel Roller Shutters can be supplied in solid or perforated single skinned laths for maximum security. Steel roller shutters are generally stronger and have a more robust look. This type of shutter is ideally suited for high street shop fronts and small industrial units.

Residential Continental Roller Shutters

The continental roller shutter takes its name from the type of shutter that is predominantly installed on properties throughout Europe. The main reason for their popularity is due to their ability to directly replace traditional window shutters, where a more modern and secure product is required. Continental roller shutters can be supplied with manual push-up or motorised operation, although it is strongly recommended that shutters over 1.8 metres wide are supplied motorised.
