Fraudsters target Fort William businesses for security solutions info

Businesses in Fort William area of Scotland are being targeted by a telephone fraudster who masquerades as a police officer in a bid to obtain details about security solutions.

Targeted small firms have been warned to be vigilant about the scam by local police, who note that all genuine, official police contact will be made in person, not over the phone.

Speaking to the Lochaber News, PC Ian Fraser explained: "[The scammer] states he is 'from Fort William police' and is calling regarding the recent spate of break-ins in the area and to ask them to contribute to a security article to be published in a police magazine.

"He goes on to ask about people's security arrangements and in some instances has been extremely rude to the person answering the telephone."

Earlier this week, Northern Constabulary officers urged those local to the Highlands and Islands to be vigilant to an advertising scam, in which fraudsters posing as police attempt to sell cut-price advertising space on behalf of the police.
